Overview
Revamping outdated design and business model
Vocabulary.com's dictionary was originally an ad-driven platform, with distracting ads scattered throughout the product. After IXL's acquisition, we removed these ads to create a clean, focused experience and shifted to a freemium model that no longer depended on ad revenue.
As part of that transition, I was responsible for overhauling several high-impact features, including the dictionary, Word of the Day, Vocabulary Lists, and Vocab Bowl. The legacy design was unfocused, inconsistent, and outdated, so I worked closely with the PM to establish a cohesive design system while tackling these redesigns.
For Vocabulary Lists, I added flashcards to each page to make it easier for students to learn the words and surfaced the word list earlier on the page so users could preview the content before committing. For Vocab Bowl, I significantly improved the visual design, clarified the different competition types and timing, and redesigned the sign-up flow.
More details on the projects coming soon.
